In the event of death
Please find below crucial information for handling the death of an employee. Inform the responsible offices immediately upon notice that an employee has passed away.

Death of an active member of staff
Hamburger Abendblatt obituaries
If the deceased was an active member of staff at Universität Hamburg, Department 2 will arrange for an obituary in the Hamburger Abendblatt.
The obituary will bear the signatures of the president and the dean or department head. The dean or department head may delegate their signature to the department spokesperson or the section head.

The cost of the obituary will be defrayed by the cost center in Department 2.
Procedure
The contact person in the deceased’s office or department coordinates with the family as to the publication date of the obituary, in order to ensure that the University’s obituary appears in the same edition as any private obituaries.
The deceased’s office or department shall inform Torsten Sturm in Department 2 (staff code -212-) as to the desired appearance date and will, in turn, receive a sample obituary. The office or department will then provide a complete obituary text, corresponding to the sample. Torsten Sturm will then submit the obituary to the Hamburger Abendblatt and conduct the final check of the galley proof.
Obituaries for the Hamburger Abendblatt must be submitted to Tina Strugies (staff code: -212-) 2 days (3 days for the Saturday edition) before the desired appearance date in order to ensure that the editorial deadline is met and the obituary will appear as planned.
Funeral wreath
If an active member of staff passes away, a funeral wreath will be ordered. Section A11 will order a wreath for the funeral service on behalf of the Executive University Board and the relevant Staff Council.
The costs will be defrayed by the cost center of Section A11.
Requests for monetary donations in lieu of a funeral wreath cannot be granted.
Death of a former or retired member of staff
Please note: The costs for obituaries and funeral wreaths for active staff members of Universität Hamburg only can be defrayed centrally.
Obituaries and funeral wreaths for former employees can no longer be financed from public funds.
Of course, colleagues are free to take out a personal obituary or donate a wreath if desired. Please note that such personal contributions may not be issued in the name of the University.
