Internships
Internships provide an opportunity to explore various fields of work and gain experience. However, the following regulations must be observed:
The purpose of employment is crucial in hiring interns. Internships are to provide vocational guidance, experience, or skills. The educational purpose must be given clear priority. Internships shall not require specific achievements—legally that would be equivalent to a work agreement and could result in the intern’s right to permanent employment.
To meet these training requirements, Universität Hamburg provides the following internship opportunities:
Mandatory internships
Mandatory internships are internships required by academic or examination regulations. These internships are remunerated with a monthly expense allowance. Payments are processed via SAP.
Pharmacy internships
These internships are scheduled after the Staatsexamen (state examination). Pharmacy internships are also remunerated with a monthly expense allowance. They are subject to social security regulations.
A specific contract must be drawn up before the commencement of any internship. This is done by HR Services. If you want to offer an internship to a candidate, please contact the responsible team head in HR.
Documents to submit:
- informal request including the duration of the internship
- intern’s CV
Internships for secondary school students (work placement)
Internships for school students are allocated directly by the faculties; they do not require a contract. Please consult the instructions for the internship program at comprehensive schools (PDF, Handreichung für das Betriebspraktikum an allgemeinbildenden Schulen) published by Hamburg’s Ministry of School and Vocational Education. If you have more questions, contact the respective faculty management.
Tips on voluntary internships:
Voluntary internships are internships that are not required by academic or examination regulations. This type of internship is not available at Universität Hamburg because labor-law-related risks cannot be fully eliminated. Furthermore, these internships are subject to social security and minimum wage payment regulations.
